Keegan has cycled over 5 000km in just 31 days

Keegan Longueira has cycled over 5 000km in just 31 days in the #Cairo2capetown for Operation Smile and Keegan is safely across the Kenyan border now.

It’s been a month since Keegan set out on his journey from Cairo, Egypt and in that month he has faced off against stone throwing Ethiopians, immense hill climbs, cold nights and an attempted robbery, but he has made it out alive – with God on his side and everyone’s prayers in his heart.

He crossed the Kenyan border on January 29 making his way to Marsibat. He commented on how desolate the place looks and how hot it had become as he drew nearer and nearer to the equator.
On Friday Keegan saw himself cycling mostly through sand and gravel as the roads took a toll on him.
“It was a slow and tough grind but knowing that people were having a golf day for me back home today really pushed me on, thank you for pushing me on,” he said.

With that he thanked everyone for the support they have been giving him throughout his trip.
He spent the night south of Marsabit in the heart of the Samburu Tribe lands.
“It’s like a movie, all clothing is traditional. Beads, rings, ear lobes, colourful clothing – the works, there are still so many untouched places in Africa,” he added.

Keegan managed 165km on Saturday putting him in Isiolo.
“Today as I rode, I had a great man on my mind. My mentor, hero and inspiration – my dad who completed the Barberton Mountain Bike Marathon today,” he said on his page on Facebook.

As he made his way through the ascents and descents of Mt Kenya, Keegan recalled how they reminded him of home, of the Drakensberg Mountains, and how he missed cycling alongside his dad.

On February 2 Keegan set a milestone for himself and for future generations as he completed 5 000km in just 31 days – he crossed the equator into the southern hemisphere and reminded himself of that special someone back home, Paige Cook, his girlfriend and of their anniversary together.
