Shack burned at Empumelweleni

A three-room shack recently burned in Empumelweleni.

The shack belonging to the Mthimunye family burned on Friday, January 23 at about 18:00.
Witnesses say they just saw a ball of fire rising up into the sky and they tried to put out the flames. They said Mr John Mthimunye was putting petrol in a generator while his wife was cooking on a gas stove nearby.

“We came here running after we saw the flames. The shack was engulfed and some of the neighbours were even afraid to help in putting out the flames. The family lost everything that was in the house. Nothing could be saved from the shack and the fire engine found everything burned when they arrived.”

The neighbours confirmed that Mr Mthimunye was badly burned, together with his young son and they were taken to hospital. His wife was believed to be staying with relatives.

Neighbours also confirmed another shack burned recently in the area and they are concerned.
A burned generator and gas containers could be seen in the debris.
