Death on our roads

Two serious accidents over the recent weekend caused the death of two unknown victims.

Authorities try to clamp down on negligent driving with more than 6 000 fines issued in one week in January.
On January 17 police were called out to the Old Middelburg road at about 21:00. A body was found lying next to the road. Pathology Services were called to the scene to retrieve the body after paramedics declared the victim dead. The man has not yet been formally identified.
The Witbank SAPS is investigating the matter and based on the victim’s injuries, they believe that he was hit by a car that drove away after the incident.

An accident occurred on the N4 off-ramp leading onto OR Tambo Street. A man was found dead in the passenger seat of a blue Fiat Uno. Two other vehicles were also involved in the collision.
Authorities do not know how the accident occurred as there were no witnesses. The driver of a Volkswagen Polo was taken to hospital and was not able to tell police what happened.

The two people driving in a red Volkswagen Golf apparently crashed into the Uno’s engine that was lying in the middle of the road some time after the initial accident.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened and police are investigating the possibility that the driver of the Uno fled the scene. The body has not yet been formally identified either.

Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison has reported that 6 188 traffic fines were issued to motorists for violating traffic regulations during weeklong operations held across the province from January 5 to January 11. Altogether 79 motorists were arrested for crimes ranging from driving under the influence to excessive speeding.
