Problems at Phillip Ndimande Secondary School

Parents of pupils at Phillip Ndimande Secondary School held a meeting to address problems.

The parents were concerned about the school’s system of passing and failing learners.
The claim that the system used was not fair as one might find that some pupil failed one subject out of nine, and had to repeat the class.
Apparently a meeting was arranged with the principal for this year, on January 12, to raise their concerns.

Parents said that the answer they received during the meeting was that nothing could be done to change the reports, as the system is automatically done after they type in the pupil’s name and marks are put in the report.
Angry parents disrupted daily proceedings at the school and demanded a meeting with the principal.
The parents claimed that they were not informed about the new system and wanted minutes of the meeting where the issue of the new system was discussed

They said the principal failed to produce the minutes of the meeting and the parents decided to go home and return the following day, Tuesday, January 13.
According to parents, the principal told them that the system has made some errors and he will fix some reports, but some cannot be fixed as the pupils had failed dismally.

The education department in Nelspruit was asked for comment, whether they were aware of the matter and what means are put in place to avoid the repetition of the issue.

Head of communication, Mr Jasper Zwane said: “Please be informed that the department is not aware of the problem you are indicating, however the District Director of Nkangala has been requested to institute an investigation into this matter and present a detailed report to the Head of Department as soon as possible.”
