Video: Klipfontein Dam ‘trashed’

Is there a valid excuse why the party goers don’t clean up after themselves at Klipfontein Dam or has it just become the norm now?

Over the festive season many parties were held at Klipfontien Dam and the party goers defaced the place with litter.
No effort was made by partygoers to clean up after themselves. They all just jumped in their cars after the party and turned a blind eye to the state of the dam area.

What people don’t understand is the environmental impact that plastic bags and glass bottles have on the environment.
The birds and fish in the area are affected by the continuous pollution that does not get cleaned up.

On November, 28 an article was published in the WITBANK NEWS about Klipfontein Dam titled ‘Klipfontein Dam or rubbish dump?’.
Residents living in the area were asked to comment about the parties that took place at the dam, and these are their views.
“The people having parties there have no respect for themselves. The place does get cleaned and within 30 minutes it is like a pigsty with people messing all over, Serious education is needed as these people can’t respect themselves, the environment and fellow cittizens. Sies, where is your dignity?,” said Mr Francois Greeff.

Dustbins at Klipfontein Dam were overflowing with rubbish and no effort was made to clean up the mess.

“I have always been an advocate of keeping Klipfontein Dam as is and perhaps fencing it in and charging a fee, but after this festive season, I have to admit that it has reached proportions way beyond what we as, residents, can and should be expected to endure. People are drunk and disorderly, they defecate and urinate on the grounds of the dam, they litter the grounds and make a general nuisance of themselves and then they leave. We as residents are stuck with the mess, this is totally unacceptable. We stay here and pay taxes and yet we are prohibited from taking a walk around the block, or even enjoying the view from our front yards, when weekends and public holidays come around, because inebriated individuals are sometimes volatile and unpredicatable. Please Theo, please can you sort out this issue, it’s beyond the scope of our authority,” said Ms Donene Diedericks.

“Disgusting. Took the kids for a walk down there during the festive season and besides the litter there are condoms, sanitary pads lying around and people go sit in between all this,” said Ms Hazel McKenzie.
