Robberies over the holidays

Despite police operations to keep crime in check over the festive season, there have been many robberies reported to Witbank SAPS.

One of these robberies took place on January 3 at about 22:00 when two security guards were on duty at a local repair shop in Kromdraai. One of the guards was in the security booth, while the other was patrolling around the side of the building. The guard in the booth saw four men approach him. One of them had a gun and aimed it straight at him.

The robber apparently told the victim not to scream or there will be ‘big trouble’. The robbers tied the guard up with shoe laces and cable ties and left him on the floor of the security booth. Several minutes later the robbers returned with the second guard and tied him up as well.
The robbers apparently stole rims and tyres from the repair shop as well as personal valuables of the guards before escaping. The tied up guards were discovered by their manager the next morning.

Another case of armed robbery was reported on Sunday, January 4 at about 22:00. The crime took place at a house in Old Coronation. The victim was apparently asleep when a noise at the door woke her up. Two men apparently got inside her house and one of them was armed with a knife.

They tied her up and stole cash that was lying on the table, a welding machine, and a grinder worth several thousand rand.
The victim’s neighbour saw the robbers leave the house and immediately went to untie the victim. They called the police who managed to respond quickly and make an arrest.

The suspect was scheduled to appear in court on Monday, January 5.
