Attacked at graveyard

Mr Martin Greyling was attacked while fetching water needed to complete the gravestone he was erecting.

On October 11 Greyling was working on erecting a gravestone at Old Pretoria Road Memorial Cemetery when he ran out of water to mix with his cement. He set out to the nearby shops when he was assaulted by three men trying to gain entry to his bakkie.

“I stopped, waiting to get onto the road after passing under the highway and next thing I saw six hands in front of me,” said Greyling.

The attack took place where the road from the cemetery meets Diedericks Street.

“I heard a crashing sound and my bakkie’s window was broken. I immediately picked up my Bible. One of them hit me through the face, while the other tried to wrestle the Bible from me, thinking I stored money in it,” continued Greyling.

Assailants broke Mr Martin Greyling’s window and tried to rob him.

One of the assailants grabbed Greyling’s arm and thrust it against the door while another reached into his car and grabbed what he thought was a cellular phone, but was instead a calculator.

“I managed to get my car back into gear and put my foot flat on the accelerator,” he said.

Greyling reported seeing the three men then run across the road and over the train tracks into the nearby field.

“It’s the second time I have had trouble here at Pretoria Memorial Cemetery, it’s just not safe to go anywhere,” he ended.
