Store owner fights back

“I saw it was clear on the one side and opened fire on the robber,” said Mr Dino Faria, Safari Supermarket owner.

On Friday, October 3 three suspects managed to rob Safari Supermarket of an undisclosed amount of money, at the risk of being shot by the store owner.

The armed robbery took place at about 18:30 when Faria was at the back of the store. Three suspects walked in and held the staff and Faria’s mother at gunpoint.
“I was coming out of the office when I saw one of them standing next to my mother at the till. I saw another closing the front door and I knew we were being robbed,” said Faria.

Faria took cover behind one of the shelves, making sure it was clear before making his way to the front of the shop, at the time two of the robbers had already walked out. It was then that Faria, knowing that his mother and staff members were out of harm’s way, decided to open fire on the remaining robber.
“I fired off nine shots, none of them hit though,” he chuckled.

The suspects ran off fearing for their lives and climbed into their get-away vehicle, a Volkswagen Golf according to one of the security guards stationed in the area.

The guard said the Golf was parked on the main road. It was red with a yellow bumper.
The three suspects escaped narrowly with their lives.
“I didn’t want to risk shooting while my family and employees were in harm’s way,” ended Faria.

In 2007 Faria lost his father at the same supermarket when armed robbers shot him dead.
