Sewerage problems in the city

Sewage problems seem to spread in some parts of the city and are affecting residents in different ways.

Recently in the CBD, smelly sewage water ran in the street near the local taxi rank and the shopping area. The sewage runs into the stalls of the hawkers selling their wares, including food, near the taxi rank.
“We have had the sewage problem for the past three weeks now, and nobody seems to care. We are selling food here and how can people buy from this smelly and dirty place? We paid to sell our wares here and we need to be treated with respect because we make business in this area,” said one of the people selling food.

One of the officials representing the hawkers said they will raise the issue with the municipality during their meeting, and they were hopefully that the sewage would be fixed.

In KwaGuqa Extension 14 a block of houses has to bear the bad odour, after sewerage pipes blocked up in one of the houses.
A family member of the most affected house said the problem started on Wednesday, September 24 and he reported the matter at municipal offices in Extension 4 the following day. Municipality promised that they would come and fix the problem, but they did not come.
The resident phoned again on Friday. According to him they said they were busy and will attend to the matter, but again municipal workers did not show up as promised.

“One of my neighbours phoned them on Saturday, they said they were aware of the matter and they will come but they did not. We cannot open the doors or the windows as the sewage is everywhere. We have to always keep an eye on the children, to stop them from playing in the smelly and dirty pool. This is very unhygienic,” said the man.

On Monday at about 9:00 the family member went to the municipal office and was told to phone a certain number. This he did and he was promised again that they would attend to the problem after two hours, but by 15:00 they did not arrive.

“The sewage is all over my place, the smell is terrible, even children cannot play outside. My yard is full of sewage and is getting close to my kitchen now. We are all at risk of contracting diseases. I have give up on the municipality. Even my neighbours are being hit by the bad smell,” added the resident.
