Tyre burst turns drift into crash

A drift gone wrong left the driver of a Subaru in hospital and a minor injured.

On September 5 Mr Juan Steyn and a friend were driving along in a blue Subaru.

Two girls were walking along to school that morning when Steyn pulled up alongside them and offered them a lift.
“We went to visit his mom in Cosmos Hospital, when we were done there he asked us if we wanted to go for a drive, we agreed,” said one of the girls.

While driving along Prinsberg Street, Steyn allegedly began to drift the Subaru.
“He did a drift and the back right tyre burst, he lost control of the car. I can’t recall what happened I think it flipped, but we ended up crashing into the palisade and wall at the back of Laerskool Panorama’s sports field,” said one of the occupants.

Langamed Emergency Management Services arrived on scene and tended to the four teens. Steyn sustained a neck injury and was suspected to have broken at least three ribs and his knee. One of the girls on the other hand suffered from a minor back, neck and chest injury.
The four teenagers were transported to Witbank Hospital for further treatment, and Steyn was admitted for his injuries.
“We are lucky to be alive,” said the girl.

Mr Ben Lamprecht, principal at Laerskool Panorama said that fortunately the accident occurred during teaching hours and not during break.
The school will discuss the matter with the Student Governing Body before pressing charges against Steyn.
“Safety comes first and we will not tolerate any actions that endanger our children,” said Lamprecht.

Repairs to the wall and palisade were carried out on Tuesday, September 9.
Steyn was unavailable for comment and the girls’ names were withheld as they are minors.
