Third baby within a month found

Too many illegal abortions go by unseen or unheard; however when their story comes to light it shocks many.

On Monday, September 8 another early born baby was discovered in a sewer spill in Hlalanikahle. Police arrived on scene to investigate the scene.

So far this is the third baby found in waste or sewer during the past month.
Residents in eMalahleni don’t need to look far to get an abortion done illegally. They just need to look on yield signs, walls, electrical boxes and everywhere else the adverts can be stuck.

One doctor was called to ask about an abortion. The scenario was that it’s a school girl, 15 years old and she is six months pregnant, was he willing to go ahead with the abortion?
“It will cost R1 000 and it’s the same day procedure, only takes a few hours and its pain free,” said the doctor.

The doctor was quick to ask when the teenager would be coming in for the abortion.
Clinics across South Africa that do abortions use a process of giving their patient a pill or set of pills to terminate the pregnancy, depending on how far along the pregnancy is, otherwise a surgical abortion is done.

In South Africa, any woman of any age can get an abortion by simply requesting, with no reasons given, if she is less than 13 weeks pregnant. If she is between 13 and 20 weeks pregnant, she can get the abortion if (a) her own physical or mental health is at stake, (b) the baby will have severe mental or physical abnormalities, (c) she is pregnant because of incest, (d) she is pregnant because of rape, or (e) she is of the personal opinion that her economic or social situation is sufficient reason for the termination of pregnancy.

If she is more than 20 weeks pregnant, she can get the abortion only if her or the foetus’ life is in danger or there are likely to be serious birth defects.

Last week the WITBANK NEWS Friday, September 5 reported on a story ‘Baby tossed away like garbage’. The story was about a newborn baby girl that was dumped in a black plastic bag with bottles, chicken bones and papers.

An autopsy was done on her on Wednesday, September 3 and the results were that it was an unnatural death.
Some of the comments about this story were posted on the WITBANK NEWS facebook page and this is what the people had to say:
*The mother must be traced and brought to book. There are people who are frustrated in their marriages longing for babies but some are killing them. What a world.
*So so sad!! That precious little angel never had a chance at having a loving family.
*That’s just cruel and evil, heartless.
*Can’t imagine what was going through this girls head so sad…did she really think this was her best option.
