Sewage problems on the rise

A blocked sewage main has led to sewage spewing out into resident’s homes and into Okapi Street.

On August 24 the sewerage channel flowing underneath two homes in Okapi Street in Tasbet Park Extension 2, blocked up.
“The sewage now flows up the manhole and out into my yard,” said Mr Hannes Grobler.

This health risk not only puts residents at risk of contracting various diseases but also just plain stinks. The sewage adds to the erosion of the once-repaired potholes in Okapi Street, speeding along its erosion process, this in turn adds to the expense of the municipality and residents.
Emalahleni Municipality have on two occasions come out and solved the issue by making use of a high pressure jet hose, unblocking the drain.
“They cleared the blockage twice but it only lasts for a few hours and then blocks up again,” said Grobler.

Grobler on a daily basis, contacts the municipality to come rectify the issue, “I last received a response from the municipality on August 31,” he ended.

Emalahleni Municipality was contacted, but failed to comment in time for print.

The blocked sewage main causes sewage to flow up the drain and into the yards of residents.
