Tolls reduced for voucher holders only

The Greatest Train Race took place recently, which is considered one of eMalahleni biggest annual event with over 15 000 who entered this year’s race.

The runners travel along the Old Middelburg Road which was blocked off from 5:45 to 13:30 on August 23.
This meant that thousands of motorists that use the road on a daily basis had to travel on the N4 instead, which meant using the TRAC Middelburg Toll Plaza.

On August 20 TRAC issued an official statement that during the race they will reduce fees from the normal R47 price to R18 for light vehicles.

However when the information reached the ears of the public some confusion occurred.
The TRAC statement, issued by communications manager Soares Nicholson, explains that road users who were diverted to the N4 by traffic officials were given a voucher that could be redeemed for the special rate at Middelburg Toll Plaza.

The voucher was only valid from 5:45 to 13:30 while the R555 was closed.
Many drivers have reported that they were surprised to find out that they had to pay full price while travelling between eMalahleni and Middelburg.

Since many road users knew about the closure, it seemed unlikely that people would travel to the Old Middelburg Road to get a voucher and then all the way back to the N4 to qualify for the discount.

TRAC has supported the Greatest Train Race in other areas as well.

“TRAC has been involved in the Greatest Train Race (a large financial injection for the local community) for years. TRAC supports the event with the toll concession, assists with marshalling, and pays the entry fees of all the TRAC employees competing in the race,” said the statement.
