Water runs the streets while taps go dry

Residents of eMalahleni can tell many stories of how bad the situation is with their water supply, or rather the lack thereof.

A resident in Extension 8 raised a concern on July 23 after noticing that there is a pipe leading to the streets from the reservoir in Browning Street.

The pipe coming from the reservoir had allegedly been leaking for almost two weeks and the water only stopped running on the morning of Tuesday, July 29.
“We had no water over the entire weekend from July 25 up to the Sunday, but the pipe from the reservoir was still running with clean water filling the entire street,’ said the angry resident, Ms Irene Cloete.

The origin of where the water came from inside the premises was not clear, but the whole of Browning Street down to the exit at Watermeyer Street was filled with clean running water.

Extension 8 residents had no water for three days and some other areas in Tasbet Park were affected too. It is not clear if the water that was from the reservoir had anything to do with the lack of water over the weekend.
“The situation is so terrible because now we are unable to have our gate lights turned on as the water has seeped in so deep into the ground, it trips the electricity. We struggle to open our remote controlled gate at times and we were alerted by an electrician that it could be damaged cables underground due to the excess water that had gone into the piping,” said Cloete.

The clean water hat is being wasted from the reservoir is not the only concern, the street is now eroding because of the damp conditions.
A portion of it has turned to gravel because the tar is being slowly washed away by the water. The corner of Browning Street and Watermeyer Street, at Speedy’s Tyres has deteriorated so bad that some drivers have opted not to use that route according to Cloete.
“We are unable to succeed in getting a maintenance vehicle to come and actually fix the problem, instead they come and park their vans and leave after a few minutes without doing any inspections. This lack of services whilst we pay for them is tedious.” complained Cloete.

Attempts to solicit comment from the municipality were unsuccessful.
