Peeled open like a tin of sardines

A BMW 328i was peeled open when its driver drove head on into a road barrier.

The accident occurred on Friday, July 18 at about 22:00.

Mr Shaun de Wet was travelling along OR Tambo Street heading out of eMalahleni when he lost control of his vehicle, a blue BMW 328i.
The BMW collided head on with the barrier railing that had been erected along the middle of the road, which acts as a separator of the lanes. With the force of impact, the barrier was bent upwards and peeled the top of the BMW off, De Wet was severely injured in the process.

Paramedics from Langamed Emergency Management Services tended to the scene and stabilised De Wet. The Jaws of Life were brought in to cut away the mangled BMW which had entrapped De Wet.

After roughly 10 minutes, De Wet was safely extracted from the vehicle and transported to Witbank Hospital for further treatment. He suffered from a head injury and lacerations to both his legs. “He was very fortunate in that accident,” said Mr Dino Padayachee from Langamed EMS, who was on scene that evening.

The scene was cleared of the wreckage, and the broken barrier had been clipped and removed from the road as to prevent further accidents.
