Mini-substation explodes

“My neighbour heard an explosion then suddenly the electricity was out,” said Ms Alta Lombard.

On July 9 at about 10:30, a mini-substation situated on Dixon Street shorted out and exploded, resulting in a fire breaking out.

Children from the neighbourhood heard the explosion and quickly looked over the wall to see the fire in the field across from Hoërskool Reynopark.

The outage resulted in parts of Reyno Ridge, Spring Valley, Extension 16 and Ben Fleur being without power.
“A mini sub caught fire as a result of suspected cable theft, which resulted in total damage to the high voltage equipment. Temporary repairs were performed on Wednesday, July 9 and power was restored to affected customers that evening with the exception of Spring Valley Plots.

“On Thursday, July 10 permanent repairs were done, new switchgear was installed and power supply was restored to all customers. The maintenance of transformers is critical at this stage and the municipality has no alternative but to perform the necessary repairs and maintenance to avoid failures of the units,” said Mr Lebohang Mofokeng, municipal spokesperson.
