Mixed reaction to speed bumps

It has been nearly two weeks since Thuto Masite’s tragic death on the Verena Road, after she was struck down dead by a passing vehicle.

Since then speed humps were erected by Provincial Department of Public Works and Roads, speed humps that the community asked for, yet some are unhappy about.

WITBANK NEWS headed out to the road in peak traffic to see how bad the humps really are.  Some commented that the humps are a nuisance and that they were poorly erected. Some of the community expressed their confusion about whether the area acts as a stop street or a zebra crossing.

Motorists, as part of road etiquette should stop at a zebra crossing if there is someone waiting to cross, but that was not the matter along the Verena Road. WITBANK NEWS watched as three children waited to cross at the zebra crossing, but they were never given the opportunity by passing motorists.

We asked our readers what they thought about the speed humps. Most praised the fact that the speed along the road is being curbed but to what effect?

Ms Vilma Chetty wrote: Yes it has achieved its purpose, as you have no choice but to come to standstill to get over, those speed humps were put up very, very badly, they are so high. I have caught my car now every time I have gone over them. I am very sorry about the loss of this beautiful child on this road, but these two speed humps will not remedy the situation as people will continue randomly walking across the road, and drivers will continue speeding.”

“How about the walking bridge for da pedestrians and it will accommodate the kids and the adults as well,” said Ms Eureka Masango on our Facebook page.

Another reader added that more speed humps should be erected along that road for all speed-devils out there.
Shamila wrote in Afrikaans that the speed humps are a disaster and exaggerated that they are as high as Table Mountain. She added that it would not help, since the children are not only crossing there, they cross wherever they please.

Ms Millicent Mokoena suggested that traffic officers be deployed at these high risk roads to control the traffic.
Other readers expressed their wishes that speed humps be erected in Mona, Langenhoven and Odendaal streets, among others.
