The accident took place on Saturday, June 28 at about 21:00 about 4km from Middelburg Toll Plaza.
According to reports all three vehicles were travelling towards Middelburg when a collision occurred between a silver Toyota truck and the silver Chevrolet. Amidst the collision a freightliner transporting empty barrels overturned, its load was strewn across the highway.
Paramedics arrived on scene and managed to extricate the driver of the Cruze from his vehicle. They then stabilised him and transported him to Witbank Hospital for further treatment.
The driver of the truck that overturned escaped the ordeal uninjured and was seen walking about the accident scene.
The highway was narrowed down to half a lane as safety officials cleared the road of the diesel spilt from the truck as well as the debris from the accident.
