Two die in weekend accident

A tragic accident killed two people on the N4 when they allegedly tried to cross the highway in the dead of night.

Cars and trucks were diverted off the busy highway onto Eadie Street as police vehicle blocked off the small stretch of road. The stretch of N4 that runs near eMalahleni CBD is especially notorious for pedestrian accidents but even after the high brick wall that stretches for more kilometres was built, pedestrians still take a shortcut over the wall instead of using the footbridge.

On June 21 at about 18:30 the driver of a white BMW was making his way home to Middelburg and hit two pedestrians crossing the road.
Apparently the driver told police that it was as if they just appeared out of nowhere. Pathology Services collected the bodies and the road was reopened, however the bodies have not yet been identified formally by their next of kin.

Witbank SAPS have stated in the past that it is illegal for pedestrians to be on the highway and they have issued fines to people trying to cross or walk next to the highway.

These laws exist for the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike, reminds Capt Eddie Hall of Witbank SAPS.
Another serious accident occurred over the weekend in Paul Sauer Street, Ben Fleur.

The narrow road is being fitted with lights but until construction is complete the street is as dark as ever. A driver of a Hyundai apparently lost control and drove into the side of a Volkswagen that tried to swerve out of the way.

Three vehicles were caught in the collision. Emergency Services treat the occupants for minor injuries.
The collision that occurred on June 21 at about 01:30 was just one of many over the weekend, some more serious than others, that kept traffic officials, emergency services busy.

A petrol tanker truck collided with a vehicle in the parking lot of a petrol station in Gordon Street. There were no injuries however the scene turned a few head as people stared at the unusual sight.
