Local Aids Council launched at a ward

A Local Aids Council in the ward was formed recently in one of the wards in Hlalanikahle.

The Ward Aids Council (WACs) was formed in ward 2 under the leadership of Cllr Jappie Msibi. The Ward Aids Council was formed during a community meeting held on Sunday, June 8

Ms Trudy Xhala-Mavimbela, manager of Transversal Unit in the office of the executive mayor explained the importance of the structure and invited people from different sectors to be involved in WACs.

With ward councillors as chairperson of Ward Aids Council (WACs) these structures report to the Local Aids Council under the leadership of the mayor. The Local Aids Council report to the District Aids Council under the leadership of the district mayor and the district report to the Provincial Aids Council under the premier of the province and the premier reports to the deputy president.

Each WACs must be made from representatives of different sectors, and must have operation plans. WACs will also be responsible for helping collect ward-level data on HIV that will help inform not only provincial councils, but also the South African National AIDS Council chaired by the deputy president.

It will assist the municipality to better respond to the HIV pandemic. Committee members in WACs will be trained on their roles and responsibilities.

A committee was formed to be part of the WACs and they belong to different sectors of the community.
