Education department extends hand of appreciation to schools

Mpumalanga Department of Education congratulates all schools that participated in the 2014 South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod, Provincial Championship.

The competition took place on May 23 to 25 at the Banquet Hall, Steve Tshwete Municipality in Middelburg.

About 82 schools participated in this annual competition and those in attendance could only marvel at the rendition of the songs. The schools that participated in the provincial championship are the schools which obtained position one and two at the district level.

Parents, learners, educators, community members and other dignitaries packed the hall to listen to and appreciate the cream of the crop express themselves through music. Categories range from Open Own Choice, Sextets, Mixed Double Quartets, Mixed choirs, to classical songs from soloists as well as songs and drama focusing on HIV/Aids.

“Music has an inspirational sensation to all who pay attention to all its powerful notes that is why we feel it with our whole being. It moves us, stimulates our imagination, opens emotions, and can pass language and cultural barriers. As a department we will continue to support these competitions since they bring about stability and discipline in our schools,” said the MEC for Education, Mrs Reginah Mhaule.

The following schools from the Nkangala District obtained first place in the provincial championship and will proceed to represent the province in the national championships which will be held in Kwa-Zulu Natal from July 8 to 10:
During Day 1 on May 23 in the Senior Phase FH Mkhabela School received first place in the Double Mixed category, the school also received first place in the Mixed Choirs: Western piece category.

The next day the FET Phase of Kopanang Secondary School and Zacheus Malaza Secondary School also received first place in the Solo Tenor and Mixed Choirs: Afrikaans piece category, respectively.

The last day of the competition, the Intermediate Phase Choir of Masinakane Primary School also achieved first place in the Open Own Choice category.
