N12 not safe for trucks

Truck hijackings are becoming a serious concern for authorities. Three trucks were hijacked recently and two of the hijackings occurred at the Watermeyer Street offramp from the N12.

On June 6 the driver of a truck was pulled over by an unknown man allegedly wearing a reflective vest at about 12:00 in the middle of the day. The suspects got into the passenger seat before the driver could react.

Two other suspects also got into the truck and they overpowered the driver. Apparently they attacked him and tied him up with shoelaces and rope.

The three suspects apparently left him in a field in the middle of nowhere with one of the suspects that stayed there to guard him while the other two drove off with the truck. Apparently after a whole night they returned in an unknown car to fetch their accomplice but left the victim where he was laying in the field.

Another hijacking took place on June 10 at the same spot near the Watermeyer off ramp from the N12 under exactly the same circumstances. At about 18:00 the heavy peak hour traffic was moving slowly. Three men opened the doors to the truck, tied the driver up with rope and shoelaces. The driver tried to lock the doors but was not fast enough.

Apparently they took the truck towards Johannesburg where they left the victim in a field halfway there. At about 03:00 the next morning he managed to escape his bounds and get a lift to the police station.

A third truck hijacking took place at the end of May although not much detail is known from that incident.
