Young girl killed on her way to church

Eight year-old Makome Mabali Tau was just going to church when a car knocked her down, killing her instantly.

According to a police statement from the police, a learner driver was driving along the Mathew Phosa Road near Phase 4 and Extension 10 and the three children were on their way to church. The incident happened on Friday, June 13 at about 15:00.

The Grade 2 learner of Dunbar Primary School was walking towards the St Engenas Zion Christian Church (the Dove ZCC) near Phase 4 with two other children.

The driver said he tried to swerve his VW Polo when he realised that one of the children was already in the middle of the road. He said groups of people were walking on the left side of the road; the child turned back and was hit by the car. She died on the spot.

Her family who resides at Extension 16 said she was a quiet child and it will take them a long time to forget about the incident as a lot was still expected from her. Witnesses said the child was flung a few metres away from the spot of the accident. Even though the family has a lot of questions, they said they were leaving everything in the hands of the Lord for their answers.

The family was still busy with funeral preparations and waiting for a post mortem result. Hopefully she will be laid to rest on Saturday.
