Bend in the road causes dents in bodywork

A man was injured when he broke his wrist as his Nissan bakkie rolled while one of his passengers was knocked unconscious.

The bakkie was heading towards eMalahleni when they were approaching a curve on the R555, where things took a different turn.

Mr Alfred Mqhana lost control of his vehicle as he was about to pass a curve on the old Ogies Road. Mqhana had with him two passengers, one was thrown out of the vehicle as it rolled and another was shocked at what had happened as he alleged that he was asleep.

The incident occurred on Monday, June 2 at about 14:05 and according to a witness, Mr Sam Melato, the bakkie was moving very fast.

“I was driving in the same direction in front of the bakkie when it overtook me as we were approaching the bend. Next thing I saw the bakkie skid off the road and there was a huge cloud of dust. After it had settled and I saw the bakkie, it was evident that it had rolled before coming to a halt,” said Melato.

Melato apparently pulled over and made sure the passengers in the bakkie were alright.

“One of them was lying under the bakkie and that confirmed to me that it had indeed rolled a few times,” added Melato. He was allegedly unable to get hold of police through his cell phone and he drove to the police station to report the incident, whilst trying to get a hold of an ambulance too.

Melato, being a Good Samaritan, returned to the scene from alerting the police of the accident to check the men and see if they were alright.

JD-Med Emergency Services arrived on scene and attended to the injuries. The driver of the bakkie, Mqhana, broke his wrist and was complaining of aches and pains over his body.

Mr John Makweng, who was asleep in the bakkie, had no serious injuries but had to be treated for shock. Makweng had allegedly been picked up along the road as he was hitchhiking. The third passenger was unconscious and no identification was found on him.

“Its tragic but at least they are okay and no lives were lost,” concluded Melato.
