Hijacked and left stranded alongside the N4

While driving along the Bethal Road, a motorist picked up two hitchhikers, not knowing he would later be hijacked.

A man was driving along the Bethal Road when he spotted two hitchhikers, he stopped to give them a lift; the one told him that they were on their way to Kwasbhamu.

While continuing along the road, one of the passengers drew a gun and held the driver at gunpoint. They told him to stop the Toyota Hilux and he was forced into the rear of the bakkie where the canopy was.

The hijackers turned onto the N4 Highway and proceeded for some time before stopping the bakkie, they bound the driver of the bakkie and left him alongside the road and drove off.

A passer by happened to see the driver and stopped to assist him, taking him to Witbank Police Station to report the matter. A case of hijacking was opened. Be on the lookout for a white Toyota Hilux 2004 model with registration FST747MP.

“We caution the community not to pick up hitchhikers along the roads, due to the number of hijackings throughout the area,” said Capt Eddie Hall, Witbank SAPS communications.

The driver of the vehicle was unavailable for comment.
