Drug committee taking action

Drug abuse is a crisis in eMalahleni being the number one drug abuse rated city in Mpumalanga.

Although the police are doing their part with catching criminals and drug dealers, there are other community members that are trying to educate younger generations about the dangers of drugs and assist victims that want a better life for them by putting drug abuse behind them.

The Drug Action Committee (DAC) brings the relevant parties together to share information and plan events. They recently met on Thursday, May 15 at the municipality.

The DAC consists of many stakeholders that are on the ground and dealing with these issues all the time, such as Sanca, several SAPS stations youth activist organisations, The Community Policing Forum, council members and municipal representatives among several other institutes. The new Chairman Vusi Madonsela who has recovered and moved on from substance abuse led the proceedings.

A brief overview was given about their previous meeting on April 10. One of the key issues that were reviewed in their previous meeting was the sex workers and the increase in substance abuse that is so often linked to that. Other issues that were discussed were corrupt police, and inappropriate marketing that is sometimes used to promote alcohol.

June is National Youth Month and many drug awareness campaigns are being held, as well as a career guidance day. Many of the members from the committee are from non- profit organisations and they are very passionate about turning eMalahleni around when it comes to the horrific reality of drug abuse.
