Woman arrested for shooting man in eye

“My brother Riaan looked over the wall wanting to confront the people for throwing a stone through our window, and then I heard it, a gun shot,” said Mr Walter Erasmus.

Mr Riaan Erasmus was allegedly shot by his neighbour on the evening of May 1.
Erasmus had climbed on a chair to look over his neighbour’s wall when he was shot in the eye.

“He fell down, grasping his face, we immediately called Langamed and the police,” continued Erasmus.
Langamed Emergency Management Services arrived on scene and tended to Erasmus who was in a state of great pain, he was transported to Life Cosmos Hospital for further treatment.

“Its not the first time we have had trouble from our neighbour living behind us in Ackerman Street, on previous occasions they have thrown stones at our house,” said Mr Walter Erasmus.

On arriving at hospital, Dr Daniel du Toit confirmed that Erasmus had been shot with a .22 calibre rifle, Du Toit contacted the police and a case of attempted murder was opened against the woman who allegedly shot Erasmus.

Erasmus was later transferred to Midmed Hospital in Middelburg for further treatment and on Monday he was transferred to a hospital in Johannesburg where he underwent surgery to repair the damaged eye, according to what the family have heard, Erasmus should be able to see in his eye after the surgery.

“We are afraid that his eye will never be normal again, he was seeing black and white,” added Erasmus.
That Monday police revisited the Erasmus family and took the statements of its family members, they then arrested the woman living behind them, and charged her with attempted murder.

She appeared in the Witbank Magistrates Court on charges of attempted murder, the case was postponed until May 13.
“According to the firearms act a pellet gun or small calibre gun is still considered a firearm and may not be fired in a municipal area, whether it be at animals, target practice or people and the police warn the community that they will be criminally charged should they fire a firearm within the municipal boundaries,” said Capt Eddie Hall, police communications.

According to the firearm system, Ms Christina Swart does not possess a license for the firearm that was allegedly used in the shooting. Additional charges of firing a firearm within municipal boundaries, and usage of a firearm without a license will be pressed against Swart in conjunction with the main charge of attempted murder.
