SPCA handles cruelty reports

SPCA is a household name and they are usually the organisation in eMalahleni that people call to report an animal cruelty case.

However not many people are aware of how the SPCA deals with individual cases.

Like any organisation they are bound by the law, therefore the inspectors have to follow procedures to make sure their activities are above reproach.

Recently they received multiple reports that several dogs were abandoned at a house in Panorama Street after the residents allegedly moved away. The neighbour contacted WITBANK NEWS last week as she was concerned that the SPCA was not taking action to rescue the dogs.

eMalahleni SPCA explained the basic steps they follow when responding to a case.

In cases where animals are abandoned on private property they will make sure the animals are fed and hydrated before issuing a warning to the property owner to respond within 24 hours. If no response is given, they will issue a final warning after making sure the animals are still alive and fed.

If the owner still does not respond, then they are legally permitted to obtain a warrant from the court to remove the animals.

Mpho Mokoane, eMalahleni SPCA inspector, said that the animals were taken to the shelter on Tuesday, April 15. Although the animals were indeed abandoned they seemed to be in good health.

They have encountered situations where reports of abandoned animals were received but they found that the owners were in the process of moving.

The owners would move their pets last when their new house was ready.

eMalahleni SPCA is very passionate about preventing cruelty to animals. SPCA is a highly regarded name with a rich history. This international organisation was established in England over 100 years ago.
