Seven arrested for drunken driving

Police and traffic officials were busy on the roads over the long weekend as seven people were arrested for drunken driving.

The first incident happened on Wednesday, April 16 at 15:30 when a police officer went out to an accident on the corner of Louise and OR Tambo streets.

At the scene he found that a Tata had hit a Mazda from behind. Allegedly the driver of the Tata could not stand and the police officer could smell alcohol on him, he was arrested and taken to a hospital for blood samples.

The next incident happened on Friday, April 18 at 04:30. Police patrolling Extension 10 found a white BMW that was parked in the middle of the road on the corner of Duncan and Mandela streets.

When they stopped next to the vehicle the driver seemed intoxicated. He was taken to a hospital where a blood sample was taken and he was arrested.

On the same day at 12:30 as police constables were patrolling Extension 12, in Greendale Street they came across an accident.
They spoke to the two drivers involved in the accident. The driver of the Nissan was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. The police took him for blood tests and he was arrested. He also did not have a driver’s license with him.

Later that day at 14:40 on the Bethal Road, a police constable noticed that a beer bottle was thrown out of a window of a blue Opel.
The police members pulled the vehicle off. The driver of the vehicle was allegedly intoxicated and was taken to a hospital so that a blood sample could be drawn. He was arrested once his blood was taken.
At 01:45 on Saturday, April 19 in Watermeyer Street police on patrol noticed a silver Polo driving slowly.
The police pulled the vehicle over and the driver of the vehicle was asked to get out. He allegedly could hardly stand and the police officers could smell liquor on him.

He was taken to hospital for a blood test. Once that was done, he was placed under arrested for driving under the influence of liquor.
The following day two people were arrested for driving under the influence of liquor.

At 02:15 as constables were patrolling the Central Business District they noticed a blue BMW. The vehicle was stopped as the police officials spoke to the driver, they could smell liquor. The driver was arrested and taken to Witbank Police Station.

Only a few minutes later the second person was arrested in Beatty Street as police constables saw a Mazda driving along the road.
The vehicle was stopped and when the constables approached, the passenger was allegedly drinking an alcoholic drink. Police could smell alcohol on the driver. He was arrested.
