Internet pet scam catches resident

A pet lover in eMalahleni lost a large sum of money in an internet scam, to a person ‘selling Persian cats’.

The incident was reported to Witbank Police Station on Saturday, April 19 after Mr Gene Jacobs transferred money into the bank account of the man who was selling the cat.

As Jacobs was browsing through the internet he found the perfect cat to add to his family. One man advertised that he was selling the cat, he was contacted and the banking details were given.

Within a few minutes the money was deposited into the seller’s bank account via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT).
Once the money was paid over, Jacobs contacted the seller to see if he had received the money so that they he could go and collect the cat.

By the time he phoned the seller, his phone was off and the money was gone.
A case of fraud and theft under false pretences has been opened.
