Special Investigation Unit in a different eMalahleni

Troubling news from the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) established to investigate corruption in various government agencies.

It came to the attention of the national media that allegations of corruption regarding a R500 million improvement project in eMalahleni are being investigated. However this statement has caused some confusion since the investigation is dealing with a municipality in the Eastern Cape near Queens Towns with the same name.

According to the agency in question the Universal Service and Access Agency of South Africa (Usaasa) the project that is being put under the microscope is in fact the one in the Eastern Cape, although they have many projects running all over the country including Mpumalanga.

Usaasa funded the construction and expansion of an electronic communications network. This was part of the agency’s long term plans to provide universal access to broadband internet by 2020.

The people of this eMalahleni can rest easy if this ambiguity is faced in the future.
