Dog on the highway sends rider flying

One unlucky motorcyclist came off his Harley Davison bike when he was on his way to Pretoria to get it customised.

The accident happened on Friday, March 28 at 09:15 when Mr Eduard van der Merwe was traveling on his bike towards Pretoria on the N4 highway.

Just before the Ferrobank off-ramp a dog ran out from the long grass in the middle of the highway and went straight in front of Van der Merwe.

Van der Merwe hit the dog, which sent him and his bike sliding on the tar and grass.

Luckily Van der Merwe was able to stand up and move onto the grass in the middle of the highway.
“I did not see the dog or its owner as the grass was too long and by the time I saw the dog it was too late,” said Van der Merwe.
When Van der Merwe looked to see where the dog had come from, he noticed that there was a man standing on the island with another six dogs.

The owner with his dogs wanted to cross the highway to get to Schoongezicht.
“I was on my way to Pretoria to get some work done on my bike,” said a shocked Van der Merwe.

Vosman Police arrived on scene and took a statement from Van der Merwe and then spoke to the owner of the dogs.
Van der Merwe was taken home by one of his colleagues.

On Monday, March 31 Van der Merwe went to the doctor for a check up.
“I have no broken bones, just a couple of bruises and scratches,” said Van der Merwe.

“Dog owners are allowed to have four sterilized dogs at the moment. We are still waiting for the new municipal bylaws. Then dog owners should have their dogs on a leash at all times when walking in the streets,” said Inspector Mpho Mokoena from Witbank SPCA.
