Link thief caught red handed

Recently there was some good news regarding substation vandalisms that has rocked eMalahleni and surrounding towns for the last month.

Two people were arrested at a local scrap yard for being in possession of stolen Magnefix links. They cost the municipality over R1000 each to replace, although they are practically worthless for their resale value, which is about R10 each.

The fight against these vandals continues as the Community Policing Forum (CPF) made another arrest on March 23.
According to Danie de Jager of Sector 3 CPF they were called out to Del Judor Sub-station at about 15:00 on Sunday.

The resident who lives across the road from the sub-station saw someone crossing the road and going into the sub-station building. The resident immediately radioed CPF members to investigate. They were on the scene within minutes and cornered the suspect inside the building just as he was about to leave.

He apparently tried to steal several links as well as battery components. The suspect was handed over to Witbank SAPS officers who were called to the scene to make the arrest.

Theo van Vuuren, municipal administrator, said: “My gratitude goes out to the CPF for their observant and proactive behaviour. Hopefully this will put a dent in the crime against our equipment and service delivery.”

Mr De Jager also said that a resident has offered to install additional security measures at that sub-station from his own pocket that would benefit the community and the municipality. They are still awaiting a response for permission to install such a security system.
