Stolen beer has a hefty price tag

Crime does not pay, as a matter of fact it can sometimes cost you more than what you bargained for.

Two Chinese citizens, Messrs H Yan and Linziang Weng was found guilty of possession of stolen goods and has to pay a R50 000 fine or spend five years behind bars.

This case was concluded in the Witbank Magistrate Court on January 24.

Yan and Weng were arrested on March 25 last year, when stolen beer worth R600 000 was found in a liquor warehouse.
Initially four Chinese men were arrested, but the case against two of the suspects was withdrawn because they were only working at the warehouse.

They purchased the beer after it was stolen from SAB Breweries.

The carefully planned armed robbery took place at SAB’s Witbank depot on Friday, March 22.
An unknown number of armed people gained access to the depot and held up security guards and logistics staff, who were busy loading trucks in the warehouse.

The robbers left the depot with three truckloads of beer, offloaded the beer, returned the trucks to the depot and left the scene.
The tracking devices fitted to the trucks were used and the vehicles were traced to the liquor warehouse on the corner of Malherbe and Long Fellow streets.
