The opinion of the Witbank dam resort

The Witbank Dam has been under the microscope in the last year regarding the quality of water, yet it still remains a popular destination for fishermen, and sailors, but what about the state of the municipal owned Witbank Dam resort?

Anglers make use of private resorts dotted around the Witbank Dam but many people still want to use the facilities at the resort.

A broken toilet is the only facility available to campers and day visitors.

Some toilets are completely broken, and showerheads are removed. Power points with live wires are exposed to rain and dust.

The general opinion from Facebook and visitors to the Witbank Dam such as cyclists all say the same thing, it is definitely not what it used to be. Anita De Langen, said on the Witbank News Facebook page, “The dam do not qualify as a resort. I drive passed it every Thursday.

It looks terrible. The one small pool is so green and I think the dam is cleaner. I would advise everybody to stay far, far away”. Another Facebook user, Joy Kitso Ntuli said, “When Liberty Christian College still existed, we used to be taken there as kids for a swim and ‘big walk’. I can tell you, its nothing like it used to be.” The chalets are also apparently not kept up to standard, Sasha Mndebele said “The grass is long, chalets are full of spiders and it’s dirty.”

The resort was also the place to be to hold events and festivals. Dionne Hogg said, “It used to be a great place to go when we were kids, we loved the super-tube. Anyone remembers the “Vat Vyf fees” that used to be held there each year. Now the place is run down and overgrown with weeds and grass. Really poorly looked after when it could still be a great place to go to. It needs some tlc (tender loving care) and stricter management.” There is a strong opinion that all is not lost, and that it can still be a really great place to go, if it is ever restored to its former glory.

Currently the cost for a day visitor is R20 per person, and R30 per vehicle as well as R30 per boat. The spokesperson for the municipality Mr Lebo Mofokeng has received the complaint and is formulating a response.

The gravel road has become a mud road that makes it impossible for an average vehicle to drive around the resort due to lack of maintenance.
