Waterlogged street in Hlalanikahle

A section of Hlalanikahle Extension has stayed in the waterlogged street for many years and their plea for the problem to be solved seems to be falling on deaf ears.

The community say they cannot remember the years they have stayed in such a situation in their area. Some of them said they cannot park their cars in their yards and some of the yards are just waterlogged and stays like that for a long time.

One of the residents said he is sick and tired of the waterlogged yard, made worse, because the water sometimes fill his shack and he had to move to his wife’s place in another section of Hlalanikahle.

“We have pleaded, we have called the present and the former councillor for this place and they all have one thing in common, they have failed us. They promised to help, but nothing has been done about the situation. It is worse after it has rained, but we have been living in this bad situation for a long a time now,” they complained.
In some of the yards water is coming from the ground.

The waterlogged street is not only a problem to the residents, but to children, especially the young ones. The parents said they feared for their children, as they need to keep an eye on them all the time.

Councillor Japie Msibi acknowledge the problem and confirmed that he was aware of the problem, because it started before he was even a ward councillor. He said a decision was taken long ago about the water and they were supposed to drain the water and put some pipes. Cllr Msibi indicated that they have encountered challenges previously, in that one of the residents did not want pipes to be put in her yard and secondly the pipes did not correspond with the previous ones. He said several meetings were held, but now a decision has been taken and the matter will be sorted out.
