Teenager died in a freak accident

The life of a teenager was cut short during a heavy thunderstorm and a windy and rainy day at Ackerville.

Zolile MacDonald Makwakwa (17) had just gone out accompanying his friend and also to buy his book covers for his new school. In a freak accident a big tree fell on him and he died on the scene. It was already raining heavily, when Zolile was coming back home at Raymond Makwakwa Street in Ackerville. The incident happened on Sunday, between 17:15 and 18:00.

A former pupil at Bonginsimbi Secondary School, Zolile had just registered at Elukhanyisweni Secondary School two weeks ago, according to his aunt, Ms Joyce Lindiwe Mmoko. He had registered for Grade 10.

It is believed that the strong wind accompanied by the thunderstorm was the cause of the tree falling down on Zolile and killing him instantly. The main road had to be closed because the tree had fallen on the road blocking the way.

“He was just a quiet, sweet young man and would just look at you without saying anything, he was a man of few words and very humble. It was just a blow to the family losing him at this young age, a lot was still expected from him,” said his aunt.
A lot of destruction was reported to other parts of KwaGuqa, with reports that roofs were blown away, damage done to streets and trees being uprooted as well.

Zolile was the only son of Mr Xolani Makwakwa popularly known as Benny.

The family was also not happy about the conduct of one of pathologists and the fact that the body was left there for hours before it was taken away from the accident scene.

The family is still busy with the funeral arrangements.
