Electrical work is a ticking time bomb

For the residents living in Loraine Street, their main concern is the workmanship of electrical work in the street.

Residents have been complaining about a short in the electricity, as it kept on tripping in six houses.

Emalahleni City Council employees went out to the problem on Monday, January 20. They started working were the problem was encountered last year in October, when a new joint was installed.

When employees took out the joint, there was a hole in it and water was flowing out of it.
“This is supposed to be a sealed unit,” said Mr Freddie Nel.

One home-owner’s driveway has been dug up and inside the hole, the main connection has been covered with insulation tape and plastic crates have been placed over the connection.

“The plastic crates are there to prevent the electrical work from getting wet, this is not going to work,” continued Nel.
From the main electrical connection, the employees from the council have run an electrical wire to one of the houses so that, that house can have electricity.

Right across from this problem, a person looks straight into an electrical box, that’s not locked, doors are off their hinges and the electrical service panel is falling off the doors.

“The electricians were using a thumper to see where the short was, but instead of them using the headset one person was lying on the ground listening to where the short was,” said Nel.

In October last year, a hole was dug in the same spot where they have dug up now. A wire was left unrepaired for an entire day. The hole was covered up with cardboard.

The City Council joined a normal cable to the main electrical supply to one of the neighbour’s homes and they attempted to cover up the joint connection with crates, so it does not get wet.

“Our electrical department went to the said area yesterday to fix the problem, a temporary cable was put in, because it was noticed that it was not a joint but a cable. What is left to do, is to go and put the paving back,” said Mr Lebo Mofokeng spokesperson from Emalahleni City Council.
