Fire breaks out at school, school time unhindered

A fire broke out in one of the administration storerooms, at Laerskool Duvhapark and a number of documents were scorched in the blaze.

On Sunday, January 19 Mr Cross Basson received a call from the school’s security company, they notified him that an alarm had gone off at the school. On his arrival he saw that the fire department and police had come out to the scene.

A fire had broken out, fortunately the security guard had reacted immediately and began dousing the fire using his fire extinguisher from his vehicle. The fire department was on standby at the scene and readied their hoses, in case the fire sprung forth again.

“At this stage we think it started from within the room, we are currently awaiting the results of the police’s investigation, once that is done, we will assert which documents were burnt in the fire,” said Mr Cross Basson, deputy principal at the school.

The blaze claimed a number of documents kept in storage and also severely damaged one of the computer systems at the school. The fire department cleared the room of smouldering documents and deemed the area safe.

“The fire we had won’t affect the running of the school, not in the least and school will continue as normal,” said Basson.
Basson added that the fire caused an estimated R100 000 worth of damage.
