Emalahleni here we come again!

Through the extreme cold and some teething problems, the event went well and raised R800 000 for charity

Last year saw the first Greatest Train Race (GTR) run from Middelburg to Emalahleni.

Through the extreme cold and some teething problems, the event went well and raised R800 000 for charity.

The GTR organising committee, consisting of volunteers and the three Rotary Clubs between eMalahleni and Middelburg went back to the drawing board to find solutions before returning the race to Emalahleni this year as originally planned.

The race will return to eMalahleni for the second year on August 24.

The race finish will move back to Middelburg in 2020/21 and continue in a two year rotational basis going forward.

In an effort to resolve the traffic congestion at the Witbank Dam experienced in 2018, race organisers will introduce a park and ride shuttle bus service this year.

Participants and spectators will park at Witbank High School and Laerskool Taalfees at a fee of R20 per vehicle.

The shuttle bus fee (R30 per person) is already included in the entry fee to participants and spectators can purchase tickets on the day at the bus point.

The long distance race will start in Middelburg near Nkangala District Municipality in Walter Sisulu Street, travelling along the R555, through eMalahleni town and past the Ridge Casino to the dam.

The 4.9km fun run and team run will be in and around the dam area with a few route improvements.

Long distance races will start at 07:00 and the fun run and teams from 08:00.

All the races will end around 13:00.

The aim is to have as little as possible disruptions on the roads.

The GTR has become a prestigious event with a proud history and the GTR organisers are committed to many charities.

Online entries are open and will close on July 31 on the website www.gtr.co.za.
