The Festival of Chariots took place here in eMalahleni on October 2 starting at Reyno Ridge Shopping Centre.

The Festival of the Chariots is sometimes referred to as Ratha Yatra, originated 5 000 years ago in India, on the East Coast state of Orrisa, in a city called Jagannatha Puri.

The Festival celebrates Lord Krishna’s return to Vrindavan and is held annually in the months of June-July to honour Lord Jagannatha (Lord of the Universe), a particular Deity form of Lord Krishna.

“The festival is a re-enactment of the event whereby Deities are placed on the chariot and the chariot is then pulled by rope, re-enacting the 400km journey first travelled when the accosted drew Lord Krishna on a chariot and returned him to Vrindavan,” explains Bhakti Chaitanya Swami, overseer (GBC) of Hare Krishna Movement (South Africa).
