Sooner or later your deeds will catch up with you.
That is what happened to Johannes Jankowitz, when he was sentenced to 16 years imprisonment on three counts, being housebreaking with the intent to murder, theft of cash and murder as read with section 51 (1) of Act 105 of 1997.
His sentencing took place at Middleburg High Court on Wednesday, July 26 after being convicted on April 19.
The 35-year-old man was not alone; he was with two other suspects Johannes Motha and Herman Venter on the evening of January 6 2015 when the ordeal happened. The three men entered a house situated at Louis Trichardt Street, Extension 10 around 22:00.
Entry was not forced as nothing was broken, it seemed one of them might have had keys. In the house was a 68-year-old man (at that time) sleeping in the comfort of his bed.
He was woken up and the men tied his hands and feet.
In addition to some jewellery, his bank card was stolen and money was withdrawn three times in different locations in eMalahleni, Springs and Kempton Park.
When police arrived on scene they found the man lying on the bed face up with 17 stab wounds
Jankowitz pleaded guilty to murder while Motha and Venter pleaded guilty only to robbery.
Venter and Motha will appear at Delmas High Court for their sentencing on Monday, October 9.
W/O Johannes Simelane from Witbank Police Station was the man who spent long nights inside the investigation booth, trying to connect the dots up until the end.
He warned people about the serious implications of murder.
“If you are a murderer you will be arrested and sentenced,” warned Simelane.
