Two months ago Commander of the trio task team Lt Col Solly Thobejane sent out a warning to community members who open false cases. This follows after a man was arrested facing charges of theft and perjury last year December about a fake truck hijacking case.
This time around on Thursday, March 9 a man alleged that a truck he was driving was hijacked and he was kidnapped by three suspects at Pap n Vleis.
The following day, being a Friday, a witness alleged that the victim gave police a false statement. He claimed that the hijacking was intentionally planned by the crew driver and the driver did not know anything about it. Investigations done by police led to the arrest of the crew driver.
According to Witbank Police Station spokesperson Capt Eddie Hall, he says Witbank is in the top 10 for truck hijacking cases especially at the N12 highway which is from Witbank to Johannesburg. At this point we are a priority town. Capt Hall warns the public to not attempt to lie under oath as they will be arrested and charged for perjury.
“Similar incidents of people that lie are those opening cases of robbery where their cell phones are taken; they too will face dire consequences.”
In this case, police spent days and long hours trying to find the suspects only to find out the case was falsified. Capt Hall said this was the fifth case opened about a similar charge and as a result fraud will not be tolerated. It is a fact you will be arrested.
