Council holds an interesting meeting

Last week members of the council gathered once again for a meeting and it was an interesting council meeting.

The council meeting took place on Thursday, February 27.  The Democratic Alliance as the members of the council are wondering why are they still waiting for an answer to a problem that was raised over a year ago.

With regards to what the DA has brought up to council and the council noted it.

A council report on payments made during December, led to the DA, who in a dramatic manner placed all their dairies, which they received from the council in a box and handing it back. An error in the narrative of the report created the impression that these dairies were purchased for more than R900 each. Based on this, the DA indicated that they are not willing to be part of such a wasteful expenditure.

The council office investigated the matter and it turned out that an official, following a finance committee meeting prior to Council where the wrong report was identified, neglected to correct the report after instructed to do so. In actual fact the amount report of R66 000 as reported at Council was correct, but it was actually for the purchase of 3000 calendars at R20 each and not for the 256 dairies.

The cost of the dairies was reflected under a different budget item and was closer to R250 each.
Disciplinary actions against the officials who failed to correct the report prior to submission to Council, may follow next week and will be dealt with by the Chief Financial Officer. Mr Lebo Mofokeng will be donating the 17 returned dairies to deserving individuals in due course.

Mr Theo van Vuuren, the administrator presented his progress report and all the councillors received a copy of the progress report. The councillors will gather on Thursday, March 6, to discuss the progress report.
