The prodical son of eMalahleni

Music is a drug, a good narcotic with a soulful high, meditative peace and the pleasure of just relaxing and enjoying a good beat. It uplifts one in so many ways for each individual.

Music is Sizwe Magwaza’s love and he lives it hoping each day will be a brighter day and better than the last.

Sizwe is an afro-soul, “with a touch of gospel,” he said; vocalist who hails from Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) and found a place he can call home in eMalahleni. He has settled here and now hopes to grow his music career in the city. His music career began when he was still in KZN at church. He sang in the choir and every now and again he would be called to sing at other churches.
“That is where my singing ability was groomed and I grew in music,” said Sizwe.

He moved to Johannesburg in 2002 to try and find greener pastures and that was the best move he made to pilot his career.
“Ever since moving to Johannesburg, doors just opened and I spread my wings and flew right through it,” he said.

Sizwe has worked with great names in the music industry and that has helped him advance and grow within his vocal talent. He was a backing vocalist for Simphiwe Dana, a South African neo-jazz artist, and toured a lot with her, locally and internationally. On one of their tours he said he was approached by a German production company to become a part of their band for a production called ‘Afrika-Afrika’ in Germany.

Sizwe said that was when he left Dana and stayed in Germany for two years before returning back to South Africa.
Upon his return Sizwe worked with various local artists as their vocal trainer and artist mentor. He has worked with the likes of Musa and Bafana Sukwene as well as choice assorted. He not only returned back for the music but to marry his sweetheart, Qinisile Magwaza, too. He married her in 2007 and they have to beautiful children together, Culo (7) and Sbahle (3). Both he and his wife are musicians and they have a duet together on his album titled ‘Brighter Day.’

Sizwe is currently in studio working on his second offering and he hopes he would have a distribution deal nationally by the time he finishes with it.

For his future plans, Sizwe has many aces up his sleeve and says he will reveal them one-by-one as time progresses. With such a strong love for music he said, “It’s the only thing in the world that makes me so happy, the closest thing that comes to my family.” Sizwe is glad that he took his passion and talent seriously as he said he probably would not be as happy as he is with music had he had chosen to do something else. With his journey through music he said he appreciates having worked with so many different musicians at different levels as that has equipped him with the necessary skills to make it in the industry.

“I have been released into the industry by the greats and am thankful for the experiences I shared with them. I am a better musician and person because of the opportunities they have shown and the doors they have helped open up for me,” said Sizwe.
Sizwe will be performing with his band on Valentines Day at a venue in eMalahleni and he has been adopted by another club as their resident entertainment on Sunday’s. “Look out for my ads and flyers about my performances and be sure to catch me and the band performing live. We don’t disappoint,” said Sizwe.
