The road claims more lives

“There are signs of her everywhere here at the stables. It was her passion. She had a heart as large as life, she was always smiling,”

The R555, the narrow stretch of road between eMalahleni and Middelburg has claimed countless lives over the years.

Last week another accident claimed several more. The incident occurred on November 9 when a coal truck’s tyre allegedly burst and the driver lost control.

In the collision two vehicles were crushed by the truck. Emergency workers spent the next several hours trying to free the surviving victims. Ms Burme Scholtz, the wife of a prominent local businessman Mr Paul Scholtz, passed away in hospital over the weekend with critical injuries.

Scholtz who worked in eMalahleni, was on her way back to Middelburg from the horse riding stables near eMalahleni when the accident occurred.

A long time friend and fellow equestrian lover had a few parting words to share about Ms Scholtz.

“There are signs of her everywhere here at the stables. It was her passion. She had a heart as large as life, she was always smiling,” said Ms Yolande Bezuidenhout an eMalahleni resident.

Her family and friends are mourning her loss. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 19 at 10:00 at the Country Ranch Stables.

She was not the only victim of the incident. Ms Candice van der Berg, who was four months pregnant, also died tragically in her car that caught alight during the accident.
