Sewage dams up once again

“The sewage is damming up in my back yard, once again. I am so sick of this problem, I do not know which way to turn anymore,”

Sewage seems to be a never ending problem in the streets of eMalahleni. On Monday, October 24, WITBANK NEWS received a phone call from a resident of Tasbet Park extension 2.

“The sewage is damming up in my back yard, once again. I am so sick of this problem, I do not know which way to turn anymore,” Mr Arthur Cooks, a resident of Dulcimer Street said.

Earlier this year, the same problem occurred when the manhole at the Merriedale Bridge was blocked.

“There are two manholes. I assume the one is for Tasbet Park extension 2 and the other for Tasbet Park, extension 3. Previously, the one on our side of the highway was blocked and we had to pay close to R2500 from our own pockets to have the drain opened. They followed the line and removed horrendous amounts of rubbish. It went well for a while, but late last week, the sewage made its appearance again,” Cooks said further.

Sewage is like dams once again, and the residents have difficulty living in these conditions.

He also added that he did contact the municipality, more than once to report the problem, but they have failed to make their appearance by time of going to print.

“When I phone, no one answers my calls or I just keep on getting transferred. I am so sick of this, we can not even use our back door. The stuff that comes from this drain is hair, sanitary pads and newspaper, to only mention a few,” were his words.

Another resident on the property said that they have tried to contact the DA, because this seems to be a problem area.

“We got a quotation of more than R3000 for a private plumber to fix the problem. Only, we can not afford that. Earlier in the year when we had the same problem, we got contributions from community members. This time, few people is willing to contribute, so it seems like we will have to dock up most of the money,” he said.

No feedback was received from the Emalahleni Local Municipality by time of going to print.
