Robbers take off on foot

In a robbery, the cashier was struck across the head moments before the robbers fled the store.

On March 9, at about 21:15 two men walked into the Engen Garage in Woltemade Street. One of the men had a R10 note in his hand and asked for cigarettes from the cashier, the cashier told the man that they do not sell single cigarettes, the man began shouting and withdrew a firearm from his belt.

He pointed the gun at the cashier as the other suspect went around the counter towards her. They demanded she open the till and the cashier, frightened for her life, was too shaken to open the till.

One of the robbers opened the cigarette drawer and removed 10 cartons from the drawer tossing them into a black plastic bag. The gun-wielder struck the cashier over the head with the butt of the gun.

As they were loading the cigarettes, a vehicle pulled up to the garage, it seemingly scared off the two robbers who then fled on foot.
“The cashier was in a state of shock after the robbery happened, fortunately she wasn’t seriously hurt,” said one of the shift managers.
