His passion has led him to not work a day in his life

“Love what you do, be passionate about it because if you do that your work will work for you.”

At first his parents were sceptical about his choice of work; they thought quitting his day job of three years was a bad idea. But eight months later Mfundo Nkoane’s pencil does not need to be sharpened as it is as sharp as ever. The 28-year-old visual artist who can paint and draw does not regret choosing art as his way of surviving.

From his student days at Robert Carruthers School and HTS, he has always loved drawing with >his group of friends.

“It was a hobby and still is. I do not consider myself working. I remember saying one day I want to be able to use a pencil just like my father,” said Mfundo.

His portfolio includes painting a mural for Phakama Primary School and the recent project he worked on at bridges situated at Botha Street.

“The paintings I have done around my area show that I want to plough back to the community. If I do not work for my community, who will?,” said a passionate Mfundo.

One of the drawings at the bridge is of the late former President Mr Nelson Mandela, he explained that he used acrylic paint to do the painting.

His biggest inspiration is his four year old daughter, he mentioned that she keeps him going and he draws strength from her.

“What I do comes naturally; I was never professionally trained for this. But you know the saying, practise makes perfect,” said Mfundo.

His future goal is to be able to draw on any surface at the moment he can draw on walls, floors, skin and canvas.
He is working on opening a studio in Ackerville which he said will be a one stop shop. The place is still under construction.

He lives by the saying “Love what you do, be passionate about it because if you do that your work will work for you.”
