The arrested suspects were caught up while traveling in a truck after they had killed the male Kudu. The incident happened on Tuesday, February 11 at about 11:00.
According to the information from the police, farm owner Mr France Havalaan said his workers told him that they have spotted a suspicious truck moving up and down near the farm and they decided to follow it.
On further inspection they saw about five suspects who ran away when they saw them and they gave chase but the suspects drove away. They workers managed to catch two
of the suspects including the driver near the Kromdraai Mine. The police was then informed and came to arrest the suspects.
Mr Havalaan has two farms adjacent to each other and confirmed that there had been several thefts on his farms, including stock theft and maize thefts. He added that about seven to ten thefts are reported to the police each year. He said he was losing a lot through theft. The Kudu carcass was found without a head. A fully-grown kudu cost about R7 000 according to Mr Havalaan.
“Snares are always found on the farm and my animals are caught in these traps. The trapped animals are then sold, the meat is sold; even the skin; hooves, horns, tail and other parts are sold as well even to traditional healers. Even my maize is stolen from the farm,” added Mr Havalaan.
